The Big Screen: The Spectacular Now

(WXIA) -- This week's review is for a movie you may not have heard of -- but you'll know about it come awards season.

The Spectacular Now is home grown; it was shot in and around Athens.

It's the love story of a popular high school senior, Miles Teller, who's a little more troubled than he lets on. He doesn't care about the future -- just living in the now and the quiet girl he dates on the rebound.

The Spectacular Now is not one of those summer thrill ride movies. It feels more natural. You want to tell the guy (Kyle Chandler, "Friday Night Lights") to make good decisions and the girl (Shailene Woodley, The Descendants) to protect herself.

Both actors should be nominated for major awards, especially Woodley, who wears almost no makeup for the entire movie. Nothing amazing happens in the film -- it's just real.

On a scale of 1 to 11, The Spectacular Now gets an 8. It's rated R for language, lots of drinking and a little nudity. It's playing in just a few theaters and opens Friday at Tara Cinemas in Buckhead.
