ATHENS -- (Athens Banner Herald) A University of Georgia athlete familiar to football fans could win one of the nation's top awards for an amateur athlete.

Karrissa Wimberley, the feature baton twirler in Bulldogs halftime shows, is one of a dozen semifinalists vying for the Amateur Athletic Union's annual Sullivan Award, given to the nation's top amateur athlete.

She faces stiff competition: University of Connecticut basketball star Maya Moore, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and figure skater Evan Lysacek, a 2009 world champion and 2010 Olympic gold medalist.
