Ga. Museum of Art to hold Goya exhibit

Ga. Museum of Art to hold Goya exhibit

ATHENS, Ga. -- The Georgia Museum of Art will host an exhibit featuring 80 prints by Francisco de Goya.

The "Disasters of War" series depicts the lengthy Peninsular War between Spanish forces and Napoleon Bonaparte's French invading army. The exhibit will run Aug. 18-Oct. 28.

The series focuses on three historical phases - the war with France, the famine that ravaged Madrid from 1811-12 and the rise of Ferdinand VII. Ferdinand ascended to the throne in 1814 after Bonaparte's fall. The prints are one of the earliest attempts by an artist to record history as it was unfolding.

Goya is regarded as one the most important Spanish artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The prints were given to the museum in 1985.

UK based singer, Callaghan, plays The Melting Point in Athens

Athens - (submitted by Emma at The Press House)  Callaghan’s show at the Melting Point is a special trio show with Athens’ own Tom ‘Panda’ Ryan and Patrick Blanchard. Panda and Patrick are regular players with Shawn Mullins and played on Callaghan’s debut album.

In the Summer of 2010 British singer-songwriter Callaghan packed up her life in London and moved to Atlanta to work with one of her musical heroes - Grammy Nominee Shawn Mullins.

Performing on piano and guitar, Callaghan combines sounds from Americana, Folk and Pop. and a voice which earns frequent comparisons with artists like Sarah McLachlan and Norah Jones.

Her songs chronicle stories and moments from her own life and from others she knows or imagines.
