Caterpillar to start hiring workers for Ga. plant

ATHENS, Ga. -- Officials at Caterpillar Inc. are seeking applicants for jobs at the company's new plant being constructed in northeast Georgia.

The openings represent the latest milestone in the company's development of a one-million-square-foot-facility the company is constructing in the Athens area. Workers will build tractors and excavators at the plant.

Company executives say they intend to fill about 30 positions in coming weeks. They include fabricators, auditors, assemblers and others. Caterpillar Human Resource Manager Mike White says the pay scale for the positions ranges from $11 to $20 per hour.

Caterpillar has said the manufacturing facility is expected to directly employ 1,400 workers once it's fully operational.

Walmart nixed from plans for new Athens complex

ATHENS, Ga. -- A new proposal, without a Walmart or a grocery store, was unveiled this week by Atlanta-based Selig Enterprises for the 9-acre Armstrong & Dobbs tract east of downtown Athens, reports the Athens Banner-Herald.

The project is expected to cost about $80 million and would open in late 2015, Selig Enterprises Senior Vice President Jo Ann Chitty told the Athens paper.

The new plan calls for about 125,000 square feet of retail space, with 35,000 square feet for an anchor tenant, and about 250 housing units with about 600 bedrooms, the paper said.

The original plan for the project was panned by some Athens residents when it was introduced a year ago, after they heard Selig Enterprises was talking with Walmart about being the anchor tenant.

Chitty said the past several months were spent redesigning the proposed development.

The newest plan, she said, is based on community feedback.

Herschel Walker to help open Athens restaurant

ATHENS, Ga. -- Legendary University of Georgia running back Herschel Walker plans to help open a new restaurant, Herschel's Famous 34 Pub & Grill in Athens.

The business on Clayton Street plans a three-day kickoff in late January, before the Super Bowl.

DD Leisure Management Corp. Vice President George Fiorile says that Doritos-crusted barbecue wings will be among the signature items on the menu.

Officials say table-side tablets will feature messages from Walker and highlights of his football, bobsledding and martial arts experiences. Plans also call for autographed menus, football memorabilia and apparel to be sold.

Fiorile said he and Walker worked together to find the Athens location, which they hope will be the first of many locations.

Which coaches in BCS contention have the best bonuses

(USA Today) -- How does a college football coach making nearly $5.5 million put a real exclamation point at the end of his season?

By increasing his take to more than $6 million, which is what Alabama's Nick Saban will do if the second-ranked Crimson Tide win Saturday's Southeastern Conference championship game and the Bowl Championship Series national title in January.

Saban's bonuses - which would come on top of $165,000 worth of incentives already reached - are a fraction of the millions earned and still at stake for major-college head coaches, according to a USA TODAY Sports review of contracts.

Mark Richt, who will lead No. 3 Georgia against Alabama on Saturday, has a chance for even more bonus money than Saban. After last season, the school gave Richt a new contract that did not increase his $2.8 million in base compensation but nearly doubled his possible bonuses. As a result, Richt has secured an extra $225,000 and could get $575,000 more.
