Powerball accelerates to $160M for Wednesday

ATLANTA – The jackpot for Powerball has continued to accelerate. The jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing is at an estimated $160 million to a single annuity winner. Tickets are $1 per play.

The game offers two payment options: the jackpot prize paid over 29 years in 30 graduated payments or the cash option, which is approximately $85 million.

As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Powerball will benefit education in the state of Georgia.

Onlooker captures funeral procession for fallen sheriff

ATLANTA – Spaulding County Sheriff Dee Stewart was buried on Thursday after a funeral service held at the Second Baptist Church in Griffin.

Stewart died from injuries he sustained after a collision with a pickup truck driven by his grandson. During his most recently campaign, Stewart said he would target illegal drugs and wanted the department to become more community-oriented.

This video, of his funeral procession, was shared by YouTube user hames74 and has become the fifth most shared video in the Atlanta area. The video was uploaded on Thursday and currently has about 900 views.

LOCAL PROFILE: R&B Scene in Atlanta

ATLANTA – Derived from popular genres of music like jazz, blues and gospel, rhythm and blues was born. Rhythm and Blues music, which is widely referred to as R&B, is unique in that it has the ability to take on many musical identities, at once. Some say the genre was first identified in Harlem, during the Harlem Renaissance, which is known as one of the most prominent cultural movements for African Americans during the 1930’s. However, others think the genre originated in the 1940’s when African Americans began moving to northern cities, creating cultural fusion.  

The music evolved from “race music”, which was an offensive term that referred to the music of African Americans, into jump blues which was known for having a swing boogie, big band sound.
