Multiple car break-ins reported in Athens

ATHENS, Ga. -- Athens-Clarke County police are investigating a rash of car break-ins that occurred Saturday.

The first incident happened between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the 1000 block of Gaines School Road. The victim told police that someone smashed her car window while she was in a nearby restaurant eating dinner with her family.

While the car was locked, the victim accidentally left her purse on the front passenger side floorboard, where it was clearly visible. Someone stole the purse, which contained the victim's identification, credit cards, gift cards, checks, cash, electronics and prescription medication.

The second break-in happened in the 1500 block of Oglethorpe Avenue between 7:30 p.m. and 9:10 p.m., again while the victim was eating dinner at a restaurant. Someone smashed the rear driver's side window and took a GPS device.

Another break-in happened in the same area of Oglethorpe Avenue at around the same time. A suspect broke a vehicle's rear window and took groceries and a makeup bag.

The final incident happened in a private driveway on Sherwood Drive. Some time between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, a suspect entered the unlocked car and took a laptop, computer case and clothing. The homeowner said the theft occurred during a party hosted by his teenage son.

All four break-ins are under investigation.
