Police: Woman stole 9-year-old girl's phone, money

ATHENS, Ga. – An Athens woman is charged with stealing money and a phone from a 9-year-old girl.

According to an Athens-Clarke County Police Department report, the girl had left her purse on a door in bathroom stall at the Georgia Square Mall in Athens on Friday.

When she went back into the bathroom with her sister to get the purse, they saw a woman walking out with what appeared to be the girl's phone in her pocket. The girl said her phone and cash were missing from her purse.

The girls told their father about the missing items and the woman. The father then confronted the woman, identified as 25-year-old Tamaranesha Burden, who went into another store. The girl's father then contacted the store's manager.

The store manager found the girl's phone in the jean pockets that were on display. Police were called.

Burden was arrested on a theft by taking charge.

The police officer found a large sum of money on one side of Burden's purse, and $36 in another area of the purse. Burden denied stealing anything. Burden's cousin noted that she had just cashed an income tax return check, and that she had her own phone.
