ATHENS: Duke student's slaying could be tied to Eve Carson case

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -- A judge has denied a defense motion to bar prosecutors from introducing evidence from the slaying of a Duke University graduate student in the trial against Laurence Alvin Lovette.

Lovetter is one of two men accused of killing Athens native Eve Carson. At the time, she was student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Lawyers representing Lovette argued Monday that testimony including details about the Durham case would prejudice a jury against their 21-year-old client.

Judge Allen Baddour ruled against the defense, but said that did not mean Lovette's attorneys could not argue during trial that certain evidence was hearsay and should not be allowed.

Carson was shot to death on March 5, 2008, after she was abducted and robbed.

Lovette has pleaded not guilty in her death.

Fellow suspect Demario Atwater pleaded guilty to Carson's murder last year and was sentenced to life in prison.
