WINDER, Ga. -- Barrow County police have arrested a Milton man in connection with an ongoing undercover investigation into online sexual predators.

According to investigators, an undercover agent posed as an underage girl and chatted online with 20-year-old Garrett Gregory Fiddyment.

After chatting for only an hour, police say Fiddyment, who was in Athens at the time, suggested that he and the girl meet for sex.

Fiddyment drove to Barrow County, where he was arrested.

Police investigate Winder highway robbery

WINDER, Ga. -- Winder police are currently looking for possible witnesses to a roadside robbery that occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 2.

According to Officer Chris Cooper with the Winder Police Department, the two victims -- one male, one female -- were driving their burgundy Toyota Corolla along Highway 11 South when the car was "bumped" by a light gray or white Ford Crown Victoria with tinted windows and a possible Florida license plate.

Two black men and a white man wearing tan stockings on their heads got out of the Crown Victoria. They attacked the male driver of the Corolla and stole cash from both victims before getting back in their car and driving away.

Police are now looking for anyone who witnessed this incident or has additional information about the suspects.

Murder suspect kills himself

ATHENS, Ga. -- Investigators said Monday afternoon that a man suspected of murder in Jackson County had taken his own life.

Police said Appling, 42, was a suspect in the shooting death of his estranged wife, Carlotta Sheilds Appling early Monday morning. They said Carlotta was shot and killed by an intruder at her home in Jefferson.

Investigators said they found that the intruder was Anthony Appling. They said he fled in his wife's car. The car was later found abandoned in Clarke County. 

At about 3 p.m. Monday, officers learned that Anthony Appling was located in a residential area near Clarke Central High School. The Athens-Clarke County Police Department and the GBI's Athens Field Office spoke with him by telephone. They said that he was with a local attorney at the time. 

Investigators said that about 3:20 p.m., Appling died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

ATHENS, Ga. -- Athens-Clarke County police are searching for a woman accused of cashing forged checks.

The suspect, pictured above, has tried to pass bad checks at least two times in the Athens area.

Anyone who knows the woman's identity is asked to call Detective Matt Cross at 706-613-3888 ext. 283.

Feds crack down on prescription drug trafficking

ATLANTA -- A federal grand jury in Atlanta has charged a total of 13 defendants from two states with illegally trafficking in oxycodone and other prescription drugs.

The two cases arise out of intensified efforts to address Georgia's growing problem with prescription drug abuse.

"Prescription drug abuse is our nation's fastest-growing segment of illegal drug use, causing significantly more overdose deaths than cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin combined," said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

In the first incident, 11 Georgia residents were charged with conspiring to forge oxycodone prescriptions and sell the illegally obtained tablets.

Breakfast fundraiser for the Athens SPO Tony Howard

ATHENS, Ga. -- The Athens-Clarke County Police Department will be cooking breakfast in honor of Special Police Officer Tony Howard on Friday, April 8th from 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

The police department is holding this breakfast as a fundraiser for SPO Tony Howard and his family. The police department is located at 3035 Lexington Road in Athens.

Officer shot in face expected to make full recovery

ATHENS, Ga. – Earlier this week, Senior Police Officer (SPO) Tony Howard was shot in the face and shoulder by carjacking suspect, 33-year-old Jaime Hood of Athens.

Officer Howard was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment. Currently, Howard is recovering and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Howard, 43, has a wife and four sons – aged 11 to 20. SPO Howard has served on the force since 2003. According to Major Mike Shockley, “Officer Howard is respected by his colleagues and has a strong commitment to the community”, he volunteers with the Athens Weed and Seed Program.

Also, in 2009, SPO Tony Howard received the Michael K. Connor Public Service Award, an award that acknowledges law enforcement officers “who have provided exemplary leadership and outstanding service on behalf of Weed and Seed communities in their jurisdiction”.
