Jamie Hood's latest incompetency bid rejected

ATHENS, Ga. -- Jamie Hood, who was found competent to stand trial in the killing of an Athens-Clarke County police officer, wants a new hearing, but a judge rejected the request.

Wednesday, a Clarke County Superior Court judge rejected Jamie Hood's request for another competency hearing.

Although Hood has already been found competent for trial, his lawyers have said their client is paranoid and suffers from delusions.

The judge called Hood a difficult client for his lawyers to deal with, but said that does not mean he is incompetent to stand trial.

Woman jailed for cutting man during argument

ATHENS, Ga. -- A 23-year-old Athens woman was jailed Tuesday for cutting a man during an argument.

The victim told police he and Sabrina Lasha Holloway were fighting at around 5 a.m. Tuesday when she grabbed a kitchen knife and told him to get out of the house.

As the victim left, he tried to grab the knife and was cut on several of his fingers, according to Athens-Clarke County Police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow.

The victim was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment, while Holloway was charged with aggravated assault and booked into the Athens-Clarke County Jail.

Homeless man sent to prison for Tent City slaying

ATHENS, Ga. -- A homeless man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in the murder of another man at the Tent City homeless camp in east Athens.

Joseph Richard Craft, 42, pleaded guilty to malice murder in the January 2011 choking death of 60-year-old Larry James David during a fight in the victim's tent.

In a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped two counts each of felony murder and aggravated assault.

When police first learned of David's death, they didn't believe he had died from foul play because officers saw no obvious sign of injuries. But an autopsy revealed that the hyoid bone in David's throat had been fractured due to strangulation, and Craft was arrested.

ATHENS, Ga. -- University of Georgia tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith was arrested on a misdemeanor charge accusing him of lying about the theft of his textbooks.

Campus police Chief Jimmy Williamson said Sunday that Flournoy-Smith reported a few days earlier that his textbooks were stolen, but that police officers found he had sold them at a bookstore, the Associated Press reported.

Flournoy-Smith was a standout at Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Ga., and played in eight games his freshman season at UGA.

According to Athens-Clarke County Jail records, Flournoy-Smith's bond was set at $1,000.

Homeless man charged with sexual battery

ATHENS, Ga. -- A man was arrested at an Athens homeless shelter over the weekend for sexually assaulting two women.

Joseph Cecil Brown was taken into custody at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

The two victims told Athens-Clarke County Police that Brown touched them inappropriately while they were staying at the Bigger Vision Homeless Shelter on North Avenue.

One of the victims also told police that Brown offered her cash for sex.

Brown is being held in the Athens-Clarke County Jail on $1,000 bond. He faces two charges of sexual battery and one count of pandering.

ATHENS, Ga. -- A man is seeking to have his murder trial moved out of Clarke County over fears that jurors will confuse him with a more notorious murder suspect with a similar name.

James Maurice Hood wants his trial moved so jurors don't confuse him with Jamie Hood.

Arrest successful at Airport Minit Market

ATHENS, Ga. -- An officer from the Athens Police Department arrested a man just before 1:00 a.m. on Monday at the Airport Mini Market located at 1989 Winterville Rd. 

Police said a call came in that there was a loud banging sound coming from behind the store. The officer found a suspect there, with an object in his hand. The officer shined his light, identified himself as police, and the subject tried to run away.

The suspect was caught after a short foot chase, as police reported. A hammer was found, along with damaged blocks at the rear of the business, where the officer first saw the suspect. 

Police have charged 31-year-old Nathan Pitts with Burglary, Second Degree Criminal Damage, Possession of Burglary Tools and Obstruction.
