Police seek information in teen's murder

ATHENS, Ga. -- Athens-Clarke County Police are asking for the public's help in solving a weekend murder.

Authorities say 19-year-old Jeremy Sean Buchanan was shot to death Sunday at the Rolling Ridge Apartments near Newton Bridge Road in Athens.

Right now, police do not have many clues in Buchanan's death and are offering a reward for anyone who can provide information leading to an arrest.

ATHENS: Zoo worker guilty of attempted animal cruelty

ATHENS, Ga. -- A former University of Georgia researcher who now works for the National Zoo has been found guilty of attempted cruelty to animals.

The charges were brought about after authorities said Nico Dauphiné tried to poison stray cats in her Washington, D.C. neighborhood.

A D.C. Superior Court judge found Dauphiné guilty of the misdemeanor this week. She faces up to 180 days in jail when she is sentenced on Nov. 21.

Dauphiné's lawyer argued during a trial that although security cameras captured his client hovering over a bowl of poisoned cat food in March, she was removing the food to keep the cats from congregating.

Stolen daycare van recovered

WATKINSVILLE, Ga. -- The Oconee County Sheriff's Office has recovered a daycare van that was stolen Tuesday morning.

According to the Nixle alert, somebody stole a 1999 Ford van used by a local Kids 'R' Kids daycare center.

The van is now being processed for evidence, according to police.

ATHENS, Ga. -- Police said a group of thieves swarmed an Athens farmers market, where they distracted the owners and got away with $8,000 from a money drawer.

Athens-Clarke police said the theft happened Monday afternoon at the market on Danielsville Road.

Five suspects were involved, according to a report. Four of them were described as being in their 20s or 30s, while the fifth man appeared older.

Police said the suspects left in a four-door Dodge pickup truck with some type of decoration on the grill and pulling a trailer with a toolbox.

Workers at the farmers market said the men appeared to be professional thieves who used "slick" talk to distract them.

ATHENS, Ga. -- Athens police say a 37-year-old Crawfordville man has been recaptured shortly after he broke away from custody while he was being led from a hospital.

Police say Maurice Antonio Mitchell was captured by Athens-Clarke County officers early Tuesday.

University of Georgia police say an officer stopped Mitchell while he was driving with a blown tire.

Police say the officer learned there were outstanding warrants charging Mitchell with theft by taking and violating probation.

Police say Mitchell fled on foot but was arrested by Athens-Clarke police.

University of Georgia spokesman Eric Dellinger says Mitchell complained he was injured and officers took him to a hospital, and he made a break for it when he was being put into a patrol car. He was arrested a short distance away.

Athens PD request help locating missing woman

ATHENS, Ga. --  Athens-Clarke County Police need your help in locating Marion Louise Bailey.

The thirty-year-old woman  was reported missing by her boyfriend on Sunday, July 24; he reported that he may have recieved text messages idicating that Bailey could be in danger.

Bailey is about 5'8 and weights around 175 lbs. She may be driving around in a gold 2002 Toyota Camery with the liscense tag BLX7154.

Probation for man running illegal casinos

Probation for man running illegal casinos

ATHENS, Ga. – On Thursday, a judge has sentenced a man to a year on probation for operation illegal casinos at convenience stores in Clarke and Jackson counties.

Alikhan Virji pleaded guilty in April to conspiring to split illegal gambling profits with an amusement company.            

Virji, who owned a gas station and convenience store in Clarke County and a Food Mart in Commerce, was fined $1,000, while Ashley fined each of the other store owners $2,000.

Michael Coleman, Virji's attorney, was pleased with the outcome.
