ATHENS | Atlanta mayor to speak at UGA

ATHENS, Ga. -- Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed will give a lecture at the University of Georgia in honor of the 1961 desegregation of the school.

Reed will deliver the annual Holmes-Hunter Lecture, named after Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Hamilton Holmes, who were the first black students to enroll at UGA. The lecture has been held every year since 1985 and focuses on race relations, black history and diversity.

The 42-year-old Reed was inaugurated the city's 59th mayor in 2010. He also served as a state legislator from 1998 to 2002.

The lecture will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7 in the UGA Chapel. It is free and open to the public.
