Janet Napolitano to lecture at UGA

ATHENS, Ga. -- Former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano will speak at the University of Georgia later this month.

Napolitano's talk, "Anatomy of a Legal Decision," is part of the UGA School of Law's Sibley Lecture Series. It will be held Monday, Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel on North Campus, and is free and open to the public.

In addition to working as secretary of homeland security from 2009 to 2013, Napolitano has served the state of Arizona, first as attorney general (1998 to 2003) and then as governor (2003 to 2009). She is currently president of the University of California system, which consists of 10 campuses, five medical centers, three national laboritories, and a statewide agriculture and natural resources program.

Napolitano is the first female valedictorian in the history of Santa Clara University, where she earned a bachelor's degree summa cum laude and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She earned a law degree from the University of Virginia and received the school's Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in 2010.
