Glamour editor to speak at UGA

ATHENS, Ga. -- A top editor from Glamour magazine is set to speak at the University of Georgia.

Cindi Leive is editor-in-chief of Glamour magazine and glamour.com, which together reach more than 15 million readers each month. Glamour outsells most other magazines and has also had great success on electronic platforms like the iPad.

Leive's talk is called "Magazines From Now On: What Works (and What Doesn't) in the Age of Twitter and Facebook." It will be held at 4 p.m. on Apr. 19 in the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries auditorium.

Leive also serves on the board of directors for the International Women's Media Foundation and is former president of the American Society of Magazine Editors. Prior to joining Glamour in May 2001, she served as editor-in-chief of Self magazine.

Coca-Cola attorney to speak at UGA

Coca-Cola attorney to speak at UGA

ATHENS, Ga. -- The general counsel for Coca-Cola North America will speak at the University of Georgia later this month.

Leslie M. Turner will lecture on the lawyer's role in the corporate world. Turner joined the Coca-Cola Co. in 2006 after leaving her job as a partner in the Washington, D.C.-based Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld law firm.

She also served as an assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of the Interior in the 1990s and was counselor to then-Secretary Bruce Babbitt.

The lecture will be held March 21 at 3:30 p.m. in the Larry Walker Room of Dean Rusk Hall. It is free and open to the public.

ATHENS | Atlanta mayor to speak at UGA

ATHENS, Ga. -- Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed will give a lecture at the University of Georgia in honor of the 1961 desegregation of the school.

Reed will deliver the annual Holmes-Hunter Lecture, named after Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Hamilton Holmes, who were the first black students to enroll at UGA. The lecture has been held every year since 1985 and focuses on race relations, black history and diversity.

The 42-year-old Reed was inaugurated the city's 59th mayor in 2010. He also served as a state legislator from 1998 to 2002.

The lecture will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7 in the UGA Chapel. It is free and open to the public.

ATHENS | German consul general to speak at UGA

ATHENS, Ga. -- Germany's consul general to Atlanta is set to give a talk at the University of Georgia on the European common currency.

The talk by Lutz Gorgens, "Ten Years of the Euro: Reason to Celebrate?" is set for Feb. 14 at 5 p.m.

Gorgens is the official representative of the German government to the southeastern United States. He has served as consul general in Atlanta since 2007 and previously headed the European Internal Market Affairs unit of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.

He has also served in Turkey, Tunisia, Mexico and the United Kingdom, among other nations.

The talk is free and open to the public.

ATLANTA – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

Pop singer, Gavin DeGraw will be performing at Atlantic Station’s “Winter Wonder Jam series. Atlantic Station will host a free concert series, which will conclude on December 23. The series has featured popular acts like: Sister Hazel and Citizen Cope, over the past couple of weeks. Attendees can text JAM to 57682 the week of each show to find out who plays next. The concert will be held at Atlantic Station’s Central Park.

The Atlanta Hawks will be holding an Open Scrimmage on Friday night from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Highlight Factory.
