Abortion surfaces as runoff issue for lawmaker | News

ATHENS, Ga. -- The sponsor of a new law tightening abortion restrictions in Georgia is getting a primary challenge from a woman who says the measure is too intrusive.
Regina Quick is running against Republican state Rep. Doug McKillip of Athens in the July 31 primary.
McKillip was the sponsor of a new law banning abortions after five months of pregnancy, except when doctors diagnose a fatal defect in a fetus. Women have been able to get abortions for any reason through the sixth month.
McKillip has argued that abortion should be largely illegal at the five-month mark, when he says fetuses can feel pain.
Quick told the Athens Banner-Herald that she opposes abortion but believes women and doctors should decide when to end a pregnancy through the sixth month, a period she calls a legal and medical gray area.
