News

ATHENS, GA (WXIA) – The University of Georgia Police Department said they arrested a man Tuesday for what they said was a kidnapping and sexual assault incident in the early morning hours of Tuesday that began in the Tate Center parking deck.

They said the suspect followed the woman through the parking deck for several minutes while she looked for her vehicle in the deck. Once she found her vehicle, the suspect attempted to force her to drive to an ATM about three miles away to have her withdraw money for him.

According to the police report, the man placed his hand on the woman’s thigh during the incident. They said the suspect maintained a “threatening and aggressive demeanor” throughout his encounter with the victim, causing her to fear for her safety. Police said she managed to get away from him.

They later arrested 31-year-old Michael Ryan King of Athens, charging him with one count each of kidnapping, attempted robbery and sexual battery. UGA Police took King to the Clarke County Jail. He was also barred from all UGA property and UGA transit for a period of two years.
