ATHENS, Ga. -- Local college students are vowing not to give up until a 'Campus Carry' gun bill is defeated for good.

Cops search for husband accused of shooting wife in front of kids

ATHENS, Ga. -- A woman is recovering in the hospital after police say her husband shot her in the chest in front of three children.

Police say, Courtney Jerrod Wiley, 30, shot Kasundra Wiley late Tuesday night. Officers responded to the Oak Hill Dr. residence and rendered aid until EMS arrived and transported the victim to the hospital.

Courtney Wiley was not at the home when police arrived and warrants have been issued for his arrest. He is charged with Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery and Cruelty to Children in the third degree. Wiley is considered armed and dangerous, according to Athens police.

Prosecutor ponders action against Athens craft brewery


ATHENS, GA -- A prosecutor in Athens says he expects to decide next week whether to cite a downtown brewery for violating state regulations involving brewery tours.

Athens Clarke County Unified Government Attorney Bill Berryman says Creature Comforts could be fined or have its license suspended for illegally giving free beer to an undercover law enforcement officer.

Berryman says the officer visited the brewery in early February.  "She went in and was able to get a beer. But while she was there for a couple of hours, there was no tour," Berryman said.   He says he is undergoing a "careful and thoughtful review" of the report before deciding whether to proceed with administrative charges, which could result in a fine or license suspension.

Athens woman celebrates 105th birthday

ATHENS, Ga. -- An Athens woman is celebrating her 105th birthday on Wednesday.

According to her family, Rosa Nell Smith Howard was born on Feb. 24, 1911 in Wilkes County, Ga.

As a child, Howard rode the family horse, Sam, back and forth to school in Rayle, Ga.

Howard later moved to New York where she became a caretaker. 

Years later, Rosa moved back to Wilkes County, where she met and married Ellis Howard. The two moved to Athens, Ga. where Rosa gave birth to two children.

Howard's family says she's a great cook and a baker. 

Rosa attributes her long life to her faith in Jesus. She said that God had a plan for her life and she is surrounded by loving friends and family.



Superintendent: 3 students accused in rape weren't suspended

ATHENS, Ga. — Three students accused of raping a classmate at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens were not suspended from classes after the alleged incident, the district superintendent has confirmed.

Three teens charged in school stairwell rape


ATHENS, Ga. -- Athens-Clark County Police are investigating after a 15-year-old girl reported she was raped by fellow students at Cedar Shoals High School.

The girl told police the rape happened in a stairwell last month.  Immediately after the alleged rape, she reported it to school officials.

DA to review case against Athens man accused of 8-year-old crime

It's a phrase heard time and time again in the American justice system. Yet an Athens, Ga. man with no criminal history has been in jail for over a month after he was accused in a crime that happened 8 years ago, in a city he says he wasn't in. Now, after a report by 11Alive News, the District Attorney for New Orleans is taking a second look at the case.

Uber driver arrested for burglarizing, sexually assaulting customer


ATHENS, Ga. -- A 49-year-old Uber driver is being held without bond after being charged with sexually assaulting a customer. 

Athens-Clarke County police confirmed to 11Alive's Valerie Hoff the attack happened on Dec. 14 and was immediately reported by the 28-year-old victim.

According to police, the woman was attending a Christmas party and called Uber to driver her to her car. They said she drove herself home, but the driver, John Kamens, followed her home. As she left her child's bedroom, the victims said she saw Kamens in her living room, where he then allegedly sexually assaulted her.
