Local political hub and famous soul food restaurant, Paschal’s Restaurant, tops our list. Come to this restaurant on Sunday afternoon and you can hob-nob and stand shoulder to shoulder with Atlanta’s political elite. The restaurant is known for their “Southern Fried Chicken” served with their famous home-style sides, which include black-eyed peas, fried okra and collard greens. They also offer classic southern cuisine like Shrimp and Grits and Fried Catfish. The restaurant is located at 180-B Northside Drive in Atlanta.

Busy Bee Café offers daily specials; from their Monday Meatloaf to their Baked Tilapia on Fridays, they’ve got it all. The restaurant has been open since 1947 when Lucy Jackson, a self-taught cook decided to open her own restaurant. Named one of the best “Cheap Eats” in Atlanta by Atlanta Magazine and featured on the Food Network show “Meat and Potatoes”, Carver’s Country Kitchen is known as being one of the best restaurants in Atlanta for soul food.  The restaurant offers student discounts, a cash only policy and some of the best meatloaf you’ve ever tasted. Check them out during their new summer hours, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The restaurant is located at 1118 West Marietta Street in Atlanta.

The Beautiful Restaurant is an Atlanta mainstay and one of the most popular soul food spots in the city and they’ve even been featured on a PBS special. The restaurant was founded in 1979. This restaurant offers on the most economically feasible lunch specials, everyday; for $5 one can choose an entrée, a choice of a veggie, bread and an iced tea or soda. Popular entrees include: Beef Oxtails, Neck Bones, Pork Chops and Chicken. The restaurant is located at 2260 Cascade Road in Atlanta.

A short walk down Auburn Avenue sits Thelma’s Kitchen, a member of the elite soul food trifeca. Thelma’s offers all of the basic soul food items with a smile. Unlike many, this restaurant accepts credit cards and has a TV, which is usually tuned into the local news or a local sporting event. This restaurant sincerely offers its patrons a taste of Atlanta. Thelmas is located at 302 Auburn Avenue in Atlanta.

The Soul Vegetarian Restaurant is located in the Historic West End neighborhood and it’s a go-to for every vegetarian or vegan who still wants to enjoy their occasional plate of southern home cooking. The restaurant is a member of a national chain of restaurants who focus on macrobiotics and gluten free living. The restaurant is located at 879 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard in Atlanta.

Popular dining room, Mary Mac’s Tea Room, has been “setting the standard for southern cooking in Atlanta” for more than 60 years. The restaurant opened in 1945 and it still makes everything from scratch. As rites of passage for every Mary Mac’s first timer, guests must request a complementary cup of Pot Likker and order a side of Southern Fried Okra. This Is It, is probably one of the most easily recognized soul food restaurants in Atlanta. The restaurant has a number of Metro Atlanta locations and they are acclaimed for their perfectly seasoned and barbecued rib tips. The restaurant started as “Butch’s Slide in BBQ” in 1977 and in 1983 “This Is It! BBQ and Seafood” was born. Looking for classic soul food, look no further, Talk of the Town, can service your soul food needs. The restaurant specializes in all things soul food and is a neighborhood favorite. The most popular plate at the restaurant is the Fried Chicken, Mac and Cheese, Greens and Cornbread meal and you can get all of that, plus a dessert for under $10. The restaurant is located at 2615 Austell Road in Marietta.

John Boy’s Home Cooking is known for its inexpensive buffet that offers a $7 buffet of soul food favorites. The restaurant prepares a number of soul food specialties. The restaurant has a friendly staff and a lot of regulars. Guests think that this restaurant offers the best soul food, in the area. They are located at 3050 Canton Road in Marietta.

Everyone in Atlanta comes to the Southside for soul food; and the Southside soul food authority will always be Big Daddy’s Soul Food Café. Known as “College Park’s Most Delicious Soul Food Restaurant”, Big Daddy’s serves everything you could ever want at, both, lunch and dinner. The restaurant’s most popular meal is its four piece chicken wings and vegetable plate for $6, which is unbeatable at any other, area, wing restaurant. And Big Daddy himself is there to greet you, as you checkout. The restaurant is located at 5436 Riverdale Road in College Park.

When you walk into Annie Laura’s Kitchen the aroma the restaurant’s home-cooked food is so thick, you leave the restaurant smelling like you cooked it yourself.  The restaurant freshly prepares food like fried chicken, pork chops, smothered turkey wings and makes a banana pudding that is “to die for”. People recommend calling ahead or eating in because the sometimes it takes, quite a while, for the food to be ready after customers place their order. The restaurant is located 6922 Highway 85 in Riverdale.

If you want authentic soul food on the way down south, check out Butch’s Chicken House in Jonesboro. The restaurant serves classic country cooking complete with a waitress who calls you “Honey”. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner Monday through Friday and is open for breakfast and lunch on Saturdays. The restaurant changes their menu daily but no one seems to mind. Butch’s is located at 192 Jonesboro Road in Jonesboro.
