Peanut acreage in Ga. hits 30-year low

Peanut acreage in Ga. hits 30-year low

ATHENS, Ga. -- A report by the University of Georgia says peanut acreage in the state has dropped to the lowest in three decades, but prices have risen.

A survey by the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that farmers planted 480,000 acres of peanuts this spring. Georgia's peanut acreage has only fallen below 500,000 acres twice in the last 30 years, the last time being 2000.

The university's report says peanut acres are down nationally, with 10.5 percent fewer acres planted than last year.

The Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service says more than 20 percent of the peanuts in Georgia are rated as poor to very poor.

The UGA report said last year's crop coming out of storage is selling for $750 a ton. The price earlier this year was $600 a ton.

Free and cheap school supplies

Free and cheap school supplies

ATLANTA -- This is the best time of year to buy both school supplies and office supplies.  Some things are as low as a penny, or even free after rebates!

I set out to find the best deals on a typical kindergarten or first grade supply list from Atlanta Public Schools.

I found the most convenient way to buy supplies is to order them through SchoolPak.com. The company will ship a box of required supplies to your home or school. The first grade list came to $55.34 including shipping.

I set out to see if I could find better deals in the stores. First our summer intern Katie and I went through the weekly sale flyers in search of the lowest possible prices for every item on our list.

Goodwill receives $5.7 million grant to help those in need

ATLANTA -- Good news is coming for many Georgians who are struggling to find jobs.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis recently announced that Goodwill of North Georgia will receive $5,724,222 to help people with barriers to employment, namely ex-offenders and low-income non-custodial parents, obtain the skills they need to find work.

The funds will go toward an Enhanced Transitional Jobs Demonstration program, which offers temporary paid work experiences to more than 3,500 people nationwide. The program improves participants' employability, earnings and opportunities for advancement, not to mention their self-sufficiency and long-term success in the workforce.

"This grant provides needed support to individuals who face significant obstacles to employment," Solis said.

LOCAL PROFILE: Georgia's Country Music Scene

LOCAL PROFILE: Georgia's Country Music Scene

ATLANTA – According to the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, “country music is a perennial Southern favorite in Atlanta and it won’t disappoint”. The music, which has its roots in the south, is known as a blend of, both, traditional and popular music. The country music genre gained widespread popularity around the mid-1900’s as music known as “hillbilly” or old-time music began to decline. Hillbilly music was a genre of music native to the people of the Ozarks. The music was usually played on acoustic instrument like a guitar or a banjo.

Over the years, old-time music changed however most of the lyrical content and instrumentation stayed the same. As it evolved, the arrangement of instruments grew to include the electronic keyboard, drums, the bass, fiddle and the harmonica.
