LOCAL PROFILE: NFL Linebacker Rennie Curran

LILBURN -- Former Brookwood High School football standout, Rennie Curran is patiently waiting for a new jersey. Over the past two years, Curran went from the University of Georgia to LP Field in Nashville and now he's back at home.

Curran was released shortly after this year's NFL pre-season, despite leading the team in tackles during the pre-season.

Since being cut, Curran has been training at Catalyst and other gyms to ensure that when he does get a call, he wont miss a step. Curran is pretty confident he'll be wearing someone's jersey soon.

Subway celebrates 500th Metro Atlanta store

Subway celebrates 500th Metro Atlanta store

ATLANTA -- With the arrival of several new stores this month, Subway celebrates the opening of more than 500 stores in Metro Atlanta since its first location in 1977.

This milestone is a testament to the Subway brand and the franchisees who have made it so successful in the Atlanta area -- not to mention the world, as Subway is the planet's largest restaurant chain with over 34,000 locations.

"We continue to offer a dining experience that meets the changing tastes and needs of our loyal patrons, so it is no surprise to see this important achievement," said Christi Estis, director of operations for Subway Development of Atlanta. "We could not have reached this milestone without the dedication of our model franchisees and employees.

BEST SPOTS: The Atlanta Braves #BravesBash

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves held their first #BravesBash social media event on Sunday evening after a matchup against the Chicago Cubs.

Although Dan Uggla broke his 33-game streak an hour before, he and all of his teammates put their smiles on and were perfectly poised to chat with fans from across the United States.

The Braves steamed a behind-the-scenes look at their first effort on their website. The event had multiple stations for fan interaction: they hosted a Conference Call, Skype with Fans, they moderated a Twitter conversation, streamed Peter Moylan’s talkshow which was named by his Twitter followers and hosted simultaneous online chats.

As a result of the effort, the team gained about 3,000 Twitter followers and acquired 16,500 Facebook likes.

Tennis center nearly $500K over budget

Tennis center nearly $500K over budget

ATHENS, Ga. -- Authorities say a tennis center planned for Athens is $490,000 above the project's $3.1 million budget.

The cost overrun is mainly the result of a two-year site selection process that involved community groups and tennis players lobbying for various locations for the center.

Officials say it cost time and money to analyze five locations that were finalists for the project.

Athens-Clarke Leisure Services director Pam Reidy said costs have also risen since work began on plans for the center in 2005.

County Manager Alan Reddish said he thinks the project will cost less than estimated once it is put out for bid. The $490,000 overrun is a worst-case scenario, he said.

The tennis center will include 12 lighted courts.

ATHENS: Sanford Stadium to unveil new video board

ATHENS: Sanford Stadium to unveil new video board

ATHENS, Ga. -- Officials say a new video board will be in place at Sanford Stadium when the University of Georgia Bulldogs open the football season.

Brookings, S.D.-based Daktronics Inc. said in a statement the video display is about 36 feet high and 73 feet wide.

Company officials say the video board can be operated as an independent display showing single large images or be divided in multiple windows to display statistics, information graphics, animations, and live and recorded video.

Sanford Stadium, with a seating capacity of more than 92,000, is the seventh-largest stadium in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Georgia opens its season Sept. 3 vs. Boise State in Atlanta. Its first game at Sanford Stadium is Sept. 10, when the Bulldogs host South Carolina.
