UGA Day to tout academics, athletics

ATLANTA (AP) -- The University of Georgia is holding an event in Atlanta to tout its athletic and academic programs.

"UGA Day" is Monday, July 25 at 7 p.m. at Cobb Galleria.

It will feature football coach Mark Richt, athletic director Greg McGarity, basketball coach Mark Fox, gymnastics coach Jay Clark and vice president for instruction Laura Jolly.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the UGA Alumni Association and the UGA Athletic Association.

Cobb Galleria is located at 2 Galleria Parkway SE in the Cumberland area.

Senior tailback Caleb King deemed academically ineligible

ATHENS, Ga. – Senior tailback Caleb King has been declared academically ineligible for the fall semester, according to statement released by The University of Georgia on Friday.

According to the statement head coach Mark Richt said, “It’s unfortunate Caleb will not be with us this season. We wish him the best in whatever he decides to do; however, we have to move forward and this will provide more opportunities for others to step up.”

At Georgia, King played in 29 games and started for ten; he will consider the options available to him before making a decision on his future plans.

CANTON: Cherokee High cheerleaders have got spirit

CANTON, Ga. -- The basketball cheerleaders at Canton's Cherokee High School can now boast that they've got award-winning spirit.

The Varsity and Junior Varsity squads traveled to Athens last week to participate in a camp held by the Universal Cheerleaders Association.

Under the direction of coach Debbie Craig, the Varsity cheerleaders participated in a number of competitions during camp and walked away with some big awards: first place in the Cheer division, first place in the Xtreme Dance Routine division and an additional award for being a Superior Squad.

The JV girls, who are coached by Micah Mitchell, also took home a trophy for being a Superior Squad.

At the end of camp, Cherokee High was awarded the coveted Beach Ball for being the school with the most spirited and involved teams.

Tony Gilbert Named Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

ATHENS, Ga. -- Former All-SEC linebacker, 3-year University of Georgia letterman and NFL veteran Tony Gilbert has been named Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at UGA, according to an announcement Tuesday by head football coach Mark Richt.

Gilbert, a native of Macon, was the defensive captain of the Bulldogs' 2002 SEC championship team, which finished 13-1 overall, won the Sugar Bowl and finished the season ranked third in the national polls.  He had 114 tackles that season, including 2.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for lost yardage, and earned 2nd team All-SEC honors that season.  Gilbert currently ranks 10th on Georgia¹s all-time list of career tacklers with 328.
